What if the opportunity you have been looking for is already in front of you, but you are avoiding it because it looks like work?
We spend a lot of time trying to control things that are outside of our control. We cannot control the economy. We cannot control the market. We cannot control our competitors. We cannot control what other people think about us or whether someone says yes or no.
But there are two things we can control.
How prepared we are.
And how hard we are willing to work when the opportunity arrives.
Preparation Comes First
You have to earn the right to be confident.
Preparation is not about knowing everything. In today’s world, there is simply too much information to know everything. It starts with curiosity.
What do you need to know?
What problem are you trying to solve?
What could you learn that would give you a competitive advantage?
Knowledge is only the beginning. Preparation also means identifying opportunities and developing the skills necessary to act on them.
The formula is simple:
Know more. See the opportunity. Build the skills. Then take action.
Work Smarter and Harder
We have all heard the phrase, “work smarter, not harder.”
But what if that is the wrong choice?
The real answer is both.
Working smarter means gaining knowledge, identifying opportunities, and developing the skills to solve problems differently.
Working harder means being willing to put in the effort when the opportunity presents itself.
There are seasons when an opportunity has a window. If you do not act during that window, the opportunity may pass.
That is why strategy and work ethic have to work together.
The strategy determines where you are going to swing the axe.
Your work ethic determines how many times you are willing to swing it.
Opportunity Is Often Disguised as Work
One of the most powerful ideas in this episode is the reminder that opportunity does not always look like opportunity.
Sometimes it looks like work.
It may look like learning something new when the old way was easier.
It may look like developing a skill you do not yet have.
It may look like fixing something in your business that has been creating friction.
It may look like having a difficult conversation.
It may look like doing the thing you have been putting off.
The opportunity may already be there. The question is whether you are willing to do the work required to take advantage of it.
Look Internally for the Opportunity
Sometimes we immediately look outside ourselves for the next opportunity.
But it may be more productive to look internally first.
Where are you experiencing friction?
What is not working?
Where are your results falling short?
What relationships would you like to improve?
What used to work at a higher level that no longer does?
These questions can reveal where your next opportunity is hiding.
Once you identify the problem, get curious.
Learn what you need to learn.
Identify the opportunity.
Then get to work.
The Choice Is Yours
Living an elevated life does not mean finding an easier path.
It means being willing to do what other people are unwilling to do.
That does not simply mean working longer hours. It means following the process.
Increase your knowledge.
Identify the opportunities.
Develop the skills.
Then put your bootstraps on and get to work.
Because sometimes the opportunity you are looking for does not look like an opportunity at all.
It looks like work.
